Portrait of Cardinal Diego de Espinosa

Diego de Espinosa y de Arévalo was an important Spanish leader in both the church and the government during the 1500s. He was born in September 1502 and passed away on September 5, 1572.

His Life and Work

Diego de Espinosa was born in a village called Martín Muñoz de las Posadas in Spain. He went to the famous University of Salamanca. There, he studied different types of law, including civil law and church law, and also theology, which is the study of religious beliefs.

Rising in Government

Diego de Espinosa became a top advisor to the king in 1562. This role was called the Councillor of the Royal Council of Castile. By 1565, he became the leader of this important council. This meant he was in charge of advising the king on many important decisions for Spain.

Becoming a Church Leader

In 1567, Diego de Espinosa became a priest. After March 1568, Pope Pius V made him a Cardinal. A Cardinal is a very high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. He also served as the Bishop of Sigüenza from 1568 to 1572. From December 1566 until his death in 1572, he held the powerful position of Inquisitor General.

The King's Palace Offer

King Philip II of Spain wanted to honor Diego de Espinosa. The king offered him a special title, Marquis, and offered to build him a grand palace. However, Diego de Espinosa only accepted the palace. He asked that it be built in his home village using public money. He also wanted it to show the royal coat of arms. This palace still stands today and is used as the Town Hall and for local schools.

A Valued Advisor

Diego de Espinosa was known for being very direct and honest. Not everyone liked this, but King Philip II valued him greatly. When the king heard about Diego de Espinosa's death in 1572, he said he had lost his best minister ever.

Memorial
