Learning Guitar
In 1959, Dieter Hertrampf started learning to play the guitar. He taught himself, which means he learned without a teacher. In 1960, he began training to be a traffic draftsman. At the same time, he played in a skiffle band. Skiffle is a type of folk music.
Early Bands
In 1961, he joined a band called the Homedia Combo. He played with them for almost two years. After that, he spent a year playing with the Dieter-Frank-Combo.
Forming the Puhdys
In 1965, Dieter Hertrampf helped start a new band called the "Puhdys." The other founding members were Peter Meyer, Udo Jacob, and Harry Jeske. The letter "d" in the band's name, Puhdys, stands for "Dieter."
He got his nickname "Quaster" from his bandmates. This happened when he had trouble playing a song called "Quartermaster's Store" by the band The Shadows.

Dieter Hertrampf began studying music at the Musikschule Friedrichshain. In 1968, he joined other groups like Teisco-Quartett and the Uve Schikora Combo. After finishing music school in 1969, he rejoined the Puhdys. He was the lead guitarist and one of the main singers. He stayed with the band until they stopped playing together in 2016. He sang the popular song Alt wie ein Baum, which came out in 1977.
Solo Work and Later Years
In 1987, Dieter Hertrampf released his first solo album. It was called Liebe Pur and came out on the Amiga record label. When the Puhdys temporarily broke up in 1989, he started a lighting company. He also co-owned a nightclub.
From 1992, he started playing with the Puhdys again. After the Puhdys officially disbanded in 2016, Dieter Hertrampf began focusing on his own music projects. These include "Ich bereue nichts," "Quaster & Friends," and "Quaster unplugged." He has been touring with these projects since 2016. He also performs as a guest with other groups, such as "Bonfire and Friends" and "Ostrock meets Classic."
