The Dimock Community Health Center Complex is a group of important old buildings in Boston, Massachusetts. You can find them at 41 and 55 Dimock Street. These buildings have a special history in healthcare.
A Special Hospital for Women
The most famous building in the complex is the Zakrzewska Building. It was built in 1872. The building was designed by architects Charles Amos Cummings and Willard T. Sears. They used a style called Stick style, which was popular back then.
This building was first known as the New England Hospital for Women and Children. It was very important because it was the first hospital in New England. It was also the second hospital in the entire United States to be run by female doctors. This was a big step forward for women in medicine!
Becoming a Historic Landmark
Over the years, the buildings were updated by James A. Fox. Because of its important history, the complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 21, 1985. This list helps protect special places in the United States.
Later, in 1991, the complex was given an even higher honor. It was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's one of the most important historic places in the country. It was recognized for its role as the "New England Hospital for Women and Children."
