Dimsie Goes To School is the very first book in the popular Dimsie series by author Dorita Fairlie Bruce. It was first published in 1921. Back then, it had a different title: The Senior Prefect. In 1925, its name was changed to Dimsie Goes To School. The talented artist Wal Paget created the pictures for the book.
Discovering Dimsie's World
The main character of this story is a ten-year-old girl named Daphne Isabel Maitland. She is known by her nickname, Dimsie. This nickname comes from her initials, D.I.M. The book starts with Dimsie on a train journey. She is heading to a new school called the Jane Willard Foundation. Her older cousin, who is also named Daphne, is already a student there. She is a "prefect," which means she helps lead and guide other students.
How the Book Changed Over Time
The Dimsie series became very popular. Because of this, Dimsie Goes to School was printed many times. Oxford University Press (OUP) reprinted it several times. In the 1950s, Spring Books also published new editions.
The pictures in the book were updated over the years. This was done to match the changing styles and fashions of the time. For example, the two images above show how the artwork changed. In 1983, a publisher called Goodchild even made some changes to the story itself. These changes helped the book reflect more modern ideas and ways of thinking.
