Music Career Highlights
Divine Brown is well-known for her 2005 Canadian radio hit, "Old Skool Love". This song was very popular with soul music fans. A reggae version of the song also gained attention in Jamaica. "Old Skool Love" earned Divine Brown a SOCAN No. 1 Song Award. Even before her first album, she performed at music festivals worldwide.
First Albums and Awards
Her first album, Divine Brown, was released in 2005. It was a success both independently and in the mainstream. The album came out on the Blacksmith label. Divine Brown has a wide vocal range.
Her second album, The Love Chronicles, was released on August 19, 2008. This album won a Juno Award in 2009. It was named the best R&B/Soul album of the year. Three songs from this album became singles: "Lay It On the Line", "Meet Me At the Roxy", and "Sunglasses".
Touring and Later Works
In 2008, Divine Brown toured with the Backstreet Boys. She joined them for their Unbreakable Tour in North America. In 2009, she was part of a documentary series called City Sonic. She performed at Toronto's Rex Hotel for the series. Also in 2009, she headlined a concert honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In January 2011, Divine Brown recorded a tribute song. It was for Dennis Brown, called "Sitting & Watching". Her third album, Something Fresh, was released in 2013. This album was produced by Divine and her manager. It features an "old school vibe with a new school twist." The album combines classic soul sounds with modern elements. The first single from it was "Gone". In 2016, she sang backup for Gowan at some shows in Toronto. In October 2016, she announced a new song, "Love Alibi". This was a collaboration with 80 Empire.
Theatre Performances
In 2023, Divine Brown performed in a musical. She played the character Hélène Kuragina in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. This was the first time the musical was performed in Canada.
