Dixon Studio Tour facts for kids
The Dixon Studio Tour is a fun art event that happens every year in northern New Mexico. It takes place in the fall in the beautiful Embudo Valley. This tour includes the small towns of Dixon, Rinconada, Embudo, Apodaca, Cañoncito, and Cuestacitas.
During the tour, you can visit artists' studios and see their amazing work. Many workshops are also offered. You can learn about things like blacksmithing, making things with clay, a special pottery technique called raku, stone carving, painting, and even poetry!
History of the Tour
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, many artists moved to Dixon. Their artwork was shown in galleries and museums outside of Dixon.
The very first Dixon Studio Tour happened in 1982. A potter named Nausika Richardson (1942-2011) had the idea for the tour. She was inspired by another art tour called the "La Cienega de Santa Fe" or Santa Fe Studio Tour.
The first Dixon tour had 23 stops where 32 artists showed their work. A surprising 2,000 people came to visit! This showed how popular the tour could be.
In 2011, the tour celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, a limited edition book was published. It was designed by David Grey and helped explain the history of the tour.
