Diya Kumari (born 30 January 1971) is an important Indian politician. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is one of India's biggest political parties. Currently, she serves as the 6th Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan. She works alongside Prem Chand Bairwa in the government led by Bhajan Lal Sharma.
Diya Kumari represents the Vidhyadhar Nagar area as a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. This means she is an elected representative for that region. She comes from the historic Kachhwaha family of the Jaipur State.
Before her current role, she was a member of the Lok Sabha (India's main parliament) from the Rajsamand area between 2019 and 2023. She is the granddaughter of Man Singh II, who was the last ruler of the princely state of Jaipur during the time of British rule in India.
Early Life and Education
Diya Kumari was born on January 30, 1971, in Jaipur. Her parents were Bhawani Singh, who was an army officer and hotel owner, and Padmini Devi. Her grandfather, Man Singh II, was the last Maharaja (ruler) of the princely state of Jaipur before India became independent.
She went to school at Modern School (New Delhi) and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls' Public School in Jaipur. She also studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Arts, London. Later, she received an honorary doctorate from Amity University, Jaipur.
Diya Kumari manages many properties, businesses, and schools. These include the famous City Palace, Jaipur, where she lives, and Jaigarh Fort. She also oversees two trusts, two schools, and three hotels.
Political Journey
Diya Kumari's family has a history in politics. Her father, Bhawani Singh, ran for elections in 1989 but did not win. Her step-grandmother, Gayatri Devi, was elected as a Member of Parliament three times from Jaipur. She won by very large numbers of votes.
Diya Kumari officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 10, 2013. Many people were there to see her join, including important leaders like Narendra Modi and Vasundhara Raje.
In 2013, she ran for the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Sawai Madhopur and won, becoming an MLA. She did not run in the 2018 elections. However, in 2019, she was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Lok Sabha from Rajsamand. She received a huge number of votes, showing strong support.
She was also chosen as a Brand Ambassador for the "Save the Girl Child" program by the Government of Rajasthan. This program helps promote the well-being and education of girls.
Currently, she is an MLA from the Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency, winning in the 2023 elections. Since December 15, 2023, she has been serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.
Family Life
Diya Kumari has three children, including Padmanabh Singh. She also manages the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation. This foundation works to help women become more independent and successful through social businesses.
