The Djibouti Region is one of six main areas, called regions, in the country of Djibouti. It used to be known as the Djibouti District. This region is special because it is the smallest in the country, but it has the most people living there.

What is the Djibouti Region?

The Djibouti Region is like a large county or province within the country of Djibouti. It is one of the main administrative divisions that help govern the country. The most important city in this region, and the capital of Djibouti, is Djibouti City. This city is the heart of the region.

Location and Size

The Djibouti Region is located in the eastern part of Djibouti. It is bordered by the Gulf of Tadjoura to the north. This gulf is an inlet of the Indian Ocean, which means it's a part of the sea that reaches into the land. The region covers an area of about 200 square kilometers (about 77 square miles). Even though it is the smallest region in Djibouti, it plays a very important role.

People and Population

In 2019, about 603,000 people lived in the Djibouti Region. This makes it the most populated region in the country. Most of these people live in Djibouti City. The high population density means there are many people living in a small area. This is common for regions that include a country's capital city.
