The Djinba are a group of Aboriginal people who are part of the larger Yolngu family. They live in the Northern Territory of Australia.

What Does "Djinba" Mean?

The name Djinba comes from their own language. It means "this." Like many Aboriginal groups, the Djinba people are divided into two main family groups, called moieties. These are the Ganalbingu and the Mandjalpingu.

Speaking the Djinba Language

The Djinba people speak their own language, also called Djinba. It is part of the Yolŋu languages family. The Djinba language is very similar to the Djinang language. About 60% of their words are the same!

Where the Djinba Live

The Djinba people traditionally lived inland, away from the coast. Their land covered about 3,100 square kilometers (1,200 square miles). This area stretched south from the northern edge of the Arafura Swamp to the upper parts of the Goyder River. Other Aboriginal groups lived near them. The Djinang were to their north-west. The Rembarrnga lived directly to their west. To their south were the Ngandi and Ritharrngu tribes.

How Djinba Society Works

A researcher named Norman Tindale noted that the Djinba were one of the most northern groups in eastern Arnhem Land. They kept the traditional Australian tribal structure. This means their society was divided into two main parts, known as Dua and Jiritja clans.
