Dmitri Viktorovich Uchaykin (born June 10, 1980 – died March 31, 2013) was a Russian ice hockey player. He played as a left-winger.

Dmitri Uchaykin was born in Khabarovsk, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time.

Playing Ice Hockey

Dmitri Uchaykin started his professional hockey career in 1998. He played for his hometown team, Amur Khabarovsk, for many years. He stayed with them until 2009.

After leaving Amur Khabarovsk, Dmitri played for a few other teams. These included HC Yugra and Ermak Angarsk. He also played for Rubin Tyumen, which was known as "Gazovik" back then.

His last team was Yertis Pavlodar. He joined this team in 2010. They played in the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship.

A Sad Event

On March 27, 2013, Dmitri was playing in a playoff game. His team, Irtysh Pavlodar, was playing against Arystan Temirtau. During the game, he was hit in the neck by a stick from an opposing player.

After the game, Dmitri went home. He started to feel unwell later that night. Sadly, he fell into a coma. He was quickly taken to the hospital.

Dmitri Uchaykin passed away on March 31, 2013. He was 32 years old. He died from bleeding in his brain. He never woke up from the coma.

Dmitri had a wife named Anna. She was expecting a baby when he passed away. He also had a daughter named Polina.

A special service was held for Dmitri in Pavlodar on April 2. He was then buried in his hometown of Khabarovsk on April 4.

Tributes to Dmitri

Many people in the hockey world were very sad about Dmitri's death. Veniamin Ignatenko, a spokesperson for his club, shared their feelings. He said that Dmitri was one of their best players. The team and fans were all very upset.

The club decided to honor Dmitri in a special way. His jersey number, 17, will never be used by another player. This is called retiring a jersey number. His jersey was also raised to the ceiling of the arena. This is a common way to remember important players.

The club also made sure Dmitri's family was taken care of. They paid his wife the rest of his contract salary. This helped his family during a very difficult time.
