Doña Antonia de Ipeñarrieta y Galdós and Her Son Don Luis is a famous painting. It was made in 1634 by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez. Today, you can see it at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.

The painting shows Doña Antonia and her son, Luis, standing. They look elegant and a little serious. Doña Antonia uses a chair for support. This showed her high social status at the royal court. Only important people had the right to sit there. Some art experts believe the boy's figure might have been added to the painting later. In this artwork, Velázquez used long, flowing brushstrokes. This style made the painting more expressive and delicate. He also captured a beautiful golden light.

The Painting's Journey

This painting stayed with the family it shows for a long time. In 1905, Doña María del Pilar Azlor de Aragón y Guillamas owned it. She was the great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Doña Antonia. She gave the painting to the Prado Museum in Madrid. She also gave them another painting by Velázquez. This second painting was a portrait of Doña Antonia's second husband, Don Diego del Corral y Arellano.

In 1989, the painting traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was part of a special Velázquez art show in New York.
