What is Doane Rock?
Doane Rock is a special type of rock called a glacial erratic. This means it was carried by a huge glacier a very long time ago. Then, it was left behind when the ice melted. It's like a giant, heavy package delivered by ice!
How Did Doane Rock Get Here?
Imagine a giant sheet of ice, like a massive frozen river, moving slowly across the land. This is what a glacier is! Doane Rock was moved by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. This was a huge glacier that covered much of North America thousands of years ago. Between 18,000 and 12,000 years ago, this glacier carried the rock to where it sits today. It was dropped between what is now the Salt Pond Visitor Center and Coast Guard Beach.
Who Was Doane Rock Named After?
This impressive boulder is named after Deacon John Doane. He was one of the first settlers in Eastham. Sometimes, people also called it Enochs or Enos Rock. This was for the deacon's son. It was also known simply as Great Rock because of its size.
