The Historic Dobbin House

A Look Back in Time

The Dobbin House was built in 1776. This makes it the oldest building still standing in Gettysburg. It was originally the home of Reverend Alexander Dobbin and his family.

The house might have been a safe stop for people escaping slavery. This network was called the Underground Railroad. It helped people travel to freedom in the North. However, this part of the Dobbin House story has not been fully proven.

During the Civil War

The Dobbin House played a role during the Battle of Gettysburg. This major battle happened in July 1863. The house was used as a temporary field hospital. Injured soldiers from both sides were cared for here.

What is it Today?

In the later 1900s, the Dobbin House had a large diorama inside. This was a model showing scenes from the Civil War. It also had a gift shop for tourists visiting the battlefield.

The Dobbin House was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, it is a popular tavern and restaurant. Visitors can enjoy meals in a historic setting.
