Doc McKenzie, whose real name is Milbert E.S. McKenzie, is a talented American gospel musician. He was born on April 29, 1949. Doc McKenzie began his music journey in 1990. He has released several albums throughout his career. Some of his most well-known albums include Ride with Jesus, Live, and Renewed. These albums were very popular and appeared on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart.
Early Life and Nickname
Milbert McKenzie was born in Olanta, South Carolina. His parents, Leroy and Cora McKenzie, were farmers. His family went to St. Mark's Holiness Church in Lake City, South Carolina. Milbert's pastor, Bishop R. C. Eaddy, gave him the nickname "Doc." He called him "Doc" because Milbert was very good at fixing things.
Milbert started leading his church choir when he was only six years old. His sister, Beronzy McKenzie, and his cousin, Handy McFadden, later started a music group called The Hi-Lites. For a while in the 1960s and 1970s, they lived in Paterson, New Jersey. They moved back home in the mid-1980s to begin their professional music careers.
Music Career Highlights
Doc McKenzie officially started his recording career in 1990. He released six albums with different record companies like Atlanta International Records and Savoy Records.
One of his big breakthrough albums was Ride with Jesus. It came out on October 22, 1996. This album became very popular and reached No. 28 on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart.
He then released another album called Live on September 15, 1998. This album also did very well, climbing to No. 21 on the same chart.
His album Renewed was released on September 1, 2009. This album was also a success, reaching No. 14 on the Gospel Albums chart. Doc McKenzie continues to share his gospel music with many fans.
