André Brown (born December 5, 1963), known as Doctor Dré, is an American rapper and radio host. He was also a famous VJ (video jockey) for MTV.

Early Life

André Brown was born and grew up in Westbury, New York. This town is located on Long Island.

Career Highlights

Doctor Dré started as a DJ at WBAU radio station in the early 1980s. This was the radio station for Adelphi University. He formed a group called "Concept Crew" with other DJs. They started making their own music.

In 1986, the group changed its name to Original Concept. They were a hip-hop group. They released one album in 1988 called Straight from the Basement of Kooley High!.

Yo! MTV Raps

From 1989 to 1995, Doctor Dré and Ed Lover hosted a popular MTV show. It was called Yo! MTV Raps. This show was very important for hip hop music.

Dré and Ed Lover also hosted a morning radio show. This was for Hot 97 (WQHT) in New York City.

Acting and Music

The duo starred in a movie in 1993 called Who's the Man?. It was directed by Ted Demme, who also helped create Yo! MTV Raps.

Dré and Ed Lover also made a music album together. It was released in 1994 and was titled Back up off Me!.

Doctor Dré also worked as a DJ for the famous music group, the Beastie Boys.

TV Appearances

Doctor Dré appeared as a guest on a few TV shows. He was on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in an episode called "Ill Will." He also appeared on The People's Court as a witness.

In 2018, he was a guest on MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber. He was with Ed Lover to promote a new version of Yo! MTV Raps.

Personal Life

Doctor Dré has type 2 diabetes. Sadly, he lost his eyesight in October 2019. He also lost his leg in 2020 due to problems from his diabetes. He is married to Brigide Brown. They have two children, a son named Arahmus and a daughter named Angelique.
