André Brown (born December 5, 1963), known as Doctor Dré, is an American rapper, radio host, and former MTV video jockey (VJ). He is famous for co-hosting the popular hip hop show Yo! MTV Raps in the 1990s.
Early Life and Start in Music
André Brown grew up in Westbury, New York, on Long Island. In the early 1980s, he started as a DJ at WBAU, a college radio station at Adelphi University. He teamed up with other DJs to form a group called "Concept Crew." They later changed their name to Original Concept and released their only album, Straight from the Basement of Kooley High, in 1988.
Doctor Dré once shared that he met famous artists like Flavor Flav and Chuck D. from Public Enemy during his time at the college radio station. He even had his own show called The Operating Room, where he interviewed hip hop stars like Run-DMC.
Becoming a TV Star
From 1989 to 1995, Doctor Dré and his friend Ed Lover became very well-known as the hosts of MTV's hit show Yo! MTV Raps. This show helped bring hip hop music and culture to a huge audience around the world.
After their success on MTV, Dré and Ed Lover also hosted a morning radio show on Hot 97 (WQHT) in New York City. They even starred together in a movie called Who's the Man? in 1993. In 1994, they released their own music album titled Back up off Me!.
Besides his work with Ed Lover, Doctor Dré also worked as a DJ for the famous music group Beastie Boys. He also had his own clothing line called Bigga Stuff in the early 1990s.
TV Appearances
Doctor Dré has made guest appearances on several TV shows. He was on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in an episode where he appeared in a dream. He also appeared on The People's Court as a witness. In 2018, he and Ed Lover were guests on MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber to talk about a new version of Yo! MTV Raps.
Personal Life
Doctor Dré is married to Brigide Brown. They have two children, a son named Arahmus and a daughter named Angelique. He has faced some serious health challenges, including type 2 diabetes, which affected his eyesight and led to him losing a leg.
