Dodge Island is a special man-made island located near Miami, Florida, in the United States. This island is home to the important Port of Miami, which is a busy place where both large cruise ships and cargo ships dock.

How Dodge Island Was Made

The first, smaller version of Dodge Island was created in the early 1900s. Workers dug out a channel called Government Cut, and the dirt they removed helped form this new land.

For a long time, the island didn't have a name. Then, in 1950, a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dodge from Wisconsin were visiting. They were friends with Frank Stearns, who worked for Miami's city planning. When they asked what the island was called, Stearns couldn't think of a name. So, he decided to name it after his friends, and that's how "Dodge Island" got its name!

Later, the island became much bigger. More dirt was added, connecting the original Dodge Island with two other man-made islands called Lummus Island and Sam's Island. This created the larger island we see today.

Where is Dodge Island?

Dodge Island is located in Biscayne Bay, which is a large body of water between the cities of Miami and Miami Beach.
