Dolores is a small town in Honduras. It is also a special type of area called a municipality. Dolores is located in the department of Copán.

What is the History of Dolores?

In 1887, the area where Dolores is now was very busy. It was a lively place, much like Santa Rosa de Copán was at that time. Even though it was well-known, Dolores was not officially recognized as its own municipality until January 1, 1920.

Before becoming its own municipality, Dolores was part of another nearby municipality called Dulce Nombre. Dulce Nombre was created in 1907, also in the Copán Department. Dolores joined Dulce Nombre on April 11, 1919. It stayed part of Dulce Nombre for a short time before becoming an independent municipality. This was an important step for the people living in Dolores.

What Villages are in Dolores?

The municipality of Dolores, Copán, includes several smaller communities called villages. These villages are important parts of the municipality. The main town, also called Dolores, is the "head" of the municipality. This means it is the central place where the local government is located.

Here are the villages that make up the municipality of Dolores:

  • Agua Buena
  • Dolores (the main town)
  • El Balsamo or La Canteada
  • El Camalote
  • Joyas Galanas
  • Pasquingal
