Santa Rosa de Copán is a lively city in Honduras. It is the main city and capital of the Copán department. You can find it about 1,150 meters (3,773 feet) above sea level.

This city is the biggest and most important in western Honduras. About 74,821 people live here (as of 2023). Santa Rosa is a key center for the government of the Copán department. Roads connect it to other important places. You can travel to San Pedro Sula in the north. It also links to the borders of El Salvador and Guatemala in the west.

Santa Rosa de Copán has a pleasant climate. Summers (March–June) are warm, with temperatures from 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84°F). Winters (December–February) are cooler, from 13°C to 15°C (55°F to 59°F).

The old part of Santa Rosa de Copán is a national monument. It has beautiful old buildings and cobblestone streets. These buildings show a style called Republican or Neoclassical architecture. This style comes from a time when tobacco farming was very important in the 1700s. The city is also close to famous spots like Copán Ruinas and Celaque National Park. Tobacco farming is still a big part of the local economy today. They grow special tobacco for cigars. The La Flor de Copán cigar factory is right in the city.

A Look at Santa Rosa's History

The town of Santa Rosa de Copán began in the early 1700s. On August 8, 1705, a Spanish captain named Don Juan García de la Candelaria bought the land. It was called "Los Llanos" back then. He started his farm with four ranches. Later, the first people who settled there named it Santa Rosa. It was then called Santa Rosa de Los Llanos.

A tobacco industry grew quickly in the early 1700s. In 1765, the town was chosen for the Royal Tobacco Company. This was a company owned by the Spanish crown. Later, the Gracias a Dios Department was divided. It became the Copán department and the Lempira department.

Santa Rosa de Copán was the capital of Honduras many times. On May 7, 1862, the country's President, Don Victoriano Castellanos Cortes, made an important rule. He changed the country's name from "State of Honduras" to "Republic of Honduras." In 1865, the town was officially renamed Santa Rosa de Copán.

The city's main church is the Catedral de Santa Rosa. It is named after Saint Rosa. This church is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán. This church group was started on February 2, 1916.

Santa Rosa's Climate

Santa Rosa de Copán has a special type of weather. It's called a subtropical highland climate. This means it's not as hot as other places in the tropics. This is because the city is high up in the mountains.

The temperatures stay pretty steady all year. There is a clear dry season during the "winter" months. The city gets about 1500 millimeters (59 inches) of rain each year.

Sports in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa de Copán has a football (soccer) team called Deportes Savio. They have been playing in the top Honduran National league since 2007. Their home games are played at the Estadio Sergio Antonio Reyes stadium.
