Dolores is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Carazo department of Nicaragua. It is the smallest municipality in the whole country. Dolores is mostly made up of its main town area.

The municipality of Dolores shares its borders with other towns. To the north and west, it borders Diriamba. To the south and east, it borders Jinotepe.
Where is Dolores Located?
Dolores is about 44 kilometers (27 miles) away from Managua, which is the capital city of Nicaragua. It is also very close to Jinotepe, only about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away.
What is the Land Like?
The land in Dolores is mostly flat. It has rivers that are part of the Rio Grande de Carazo river system.
Dolores's Past: A Look at Its History
There are two main ideas about how Dolores got its name. Both stories are interesting!
How Dolores Got Its Name
Some historians believe that between 1890 and 1895, a statue of the Most Holy Virgin of Sorrows was found in the area. This statue was then carried in a parade to the main church in Jinotepe. This is where it stayed.
Another story says that the name came from one of the first families who settled in the area. There was a lady in this family named Dolores. Because of her, the town was given the name Dolores.
When Dolores Became a Town
Dolores officially became a town by law on October 14, 1904.

Dolores has a population of 8,916 people. More than half of the people living in Dolores are women, making up about 53.2% of the population. Men make up about 46.8%. Most of the people, nearly 88%, live in the main town area.

Dolores has a tropical savannah climate. This means it is semi-humid.
Rain and Temperature
The area gets between 1200 and 1400 millimeters (47 to 55 inches) of rain each year. The rain is spread out well throughout the year. The temperature stays pretty steady, usually between 22 and 23 °C (72 to 73 °F) all year long.

The town's main festivities happen from May 1st to May 10th. On May 3rd, there are parades through all the streets of the town. These parades often include floats and queens of the festivities.
