Jinotepe (pronounced hee-noh-TEH-peh) is a lively city and municipality in the Carazo Department of Nicaragua. It is located in the western part of the country.
This city shares its borders with several other important areas. These include Managua, Masaya, Granada, and Rivas.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Jinotepe
The name Jinotepe comes from an ancient language called Náhuatl. This language was spoken by some of the first people in the area.
The word "Jinotepe" is made up of three parts:
- "xilotl" means "tender corn"
- "tepetl" means "hill"
- "-k" means "place"
So, Jinotepe means "the place of the tender corn". This name tells us that corn was likely very important to the people who first lived here.
