Dolors Sabater's Career in Politics
Dolors Sabater has had an interesting career. She started as a teacher, focusing on special needs education. This means she helped students who needed extra support in their learning. She has always been a strong supporter of disability rights. This is because her brother, Frederic, has an intellectual disability.
Becoming Mayor of Badalona
In June 2015, Dolors Sabater became the mayor of her hometown, Badalona. She took over from the previous mayor, Xavier García Albiol. Her local party, called Guanyem Badalona en Comú, received support from other left-wing political groups.
When she became mayor, she took an oath to be loyal to the Spanish Constitution. However, she added her own words. She said she would be loyal "until the working Catalan people, exercising their democratic will, decide to construct the freer, more sovereign and more socially just Catalan Republic." This showed her belief in more self-rule for Catalonia.
Losing the Mayor Position
In May 2018, Dolors Sabater faced a "vote of no confidence." This is when other politicians vote to decide if they still support the current leader. She lost this vote. In June, she was replaced as mayor by Àlex Pastor from the Socialists' Party of Catalonia.
Return to Politics and Parliament
In May 2020, the mayor who replaced her, Àlex Pastor, resigned from his position. This created a new chance for Dolors Sabater. There was a plan for her party and the Socialists to share the mayor's role. Dolors Sabater would be mayor for 18 months, and then Rubén Guijarro would take over for the next 18 months. However, this plan did not work out. Instead, Xavier García Albiol became mayor again.
Joining the Parliament of Catalonia
In December 2020, Dolors Sabater was chosen to be a candidate for regional president. She ran for the Popular Unity Candidacy party and the Guanyem Catalunya group. This was for the Catalan elections held on 14 February 2021. Her party received about 6.69% of the votes. This allowed them to win nine seats in the Parliament of Catalonia.
