Xavier García Albiol (born 8 December 1967) is a Spanish politician. He is a member of the People's Party. He has been the leader of his party in Badalona since 1990. He served as the mayor of Badalona from 2011 to 2015. He was mayor again from 2020 to 2021. In 2023, he was elected mayor for a third time.

About Xavier García Albiol
Xavier García Albiol was born in Badalona, Spain. His father was a street sweeper driver. His mother was a hairdresser. He grew up in the Morera area of Badalona. He went to the Colegio Badalonés for his studies.
Early Life and Sports
Albiol was very tall, standing at 2.01 meters (about 6 feet 7 inches). Because of his height, he played basketball. He was part of the Joventut Badalona team. He started studying law in college. However, in 1989, he decided to leave his studies. He chose to start a career in politics instead.
Beginning in Politics
In 1990, Albiol became the president of the People's Party in Badalona. This was his first big step in politics. In 1991, he took his first public job. He became a councilor in the city of Badalona. A councilor is like a local representative. They help make decisions for the city.
Political Career
Xavier García Albiol has held many important roles. He has been a key figure in the People's Party. He led the party in Badalona twice. His first time was from 1990 to 1996. Then he led again from 2001 until now.
Party Leadership Roles
From 1995 to 2000, he was the Secretary General of the People's Party. This is a very important role in a political party. He also held other leadership positions. He was vice-Secretary General of the People's Party of Catalonia (PPC). This was from 2000 to 2003. Later, he directed the PPC's campaign. This was for the 2008 Spanish general election.
Regional Government Roles
Albiol also worked in regional government. He was a deputy speaker for his party. This was in the Comarcal Council of Barcelonés. He held this role from 1991 to 1995. Later, he became the speaker from 1995 to 1999. He also advised the Mancomunidad of Municipalities. This group works for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. Mayor of Badalona
Xavier García Albiol has been the mayor of Badalona three times. This is a very important job. The mayor is the main leader of the city.
First Term as Mayor
On 6 June 2011, Albiol was first elected mayor. He won by a simple majority of votes. This means he got the most votes.
In 2013, he started a special campaign. It was called "In Badalona, we don't waste food." This campaign worked with supermarkets. It aimed to sell food nearing its expiration date. The goal was to reduce food waste. These foods were sold at a 50% lower price.
Losing and Regaining the Mayor's Office
In the 2015 city election, Albiol's party got the most votes. They also won the most city councilors. They had 11 out of 27 councilors. However, 15 councilors from other parties joined together. They voted for another candidate, Dolors Sabater. So, she became mayor instead. Albiol said the city was "outraged" by this. He noted it was the first time the mayor was not from the party with the most votes.
In April 2020, the mayor at the time resigned. This created an opportunity for Albiol. Other parties could not agree on a new mayor. So, Albiol became mayor for the second time.
Third Term as Mayor
In the 2023 local elections, Albiol's party won again. They received the most votes. They also won 18 out of 27 town councilors. This was a clear victory. On June 18, 2023, Xavier García Albiol was sworn in. He became the mayor of Badalona for the third time.
Other Roles
Besides being mayor, Albiol has served in other important roles. Since 2016, he has been part of the Spanish delegation. This group works with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. This assembly helps countries in Europe work together. He is a member of several committees there. These committees deal with legal issues, human rights, and migration.
