Early Life and Career
Xavier García Albiol grew up in Morera, a neighborhood in Badalona, Spain. His father was a street sweeper driver, and his mother was a hairdresser. He attended the Colegio Badalonés for his studies.
Because he was very tall (2.01 meters or about 6 feet 7 inches), he played basketball for the Joventut Badalona team. He started studying law, but in 1989, he decided to focus on a career in politics instead.
Starting in Politics
In 1990, Albiol became the president of the People's Party in Badalona. The next year, in 1991, he took his first public job as a councilor in Badalona. This was the beginning of his long political journey.
Political Roles and Achievements
Xavier García Albiol has held many important roles within the People's Party. He was the president of the People's Party of Badalona twice. His first term was from 1990 to 1996, and his second term started in 2001 and continues today.
He also served as the Secretary General of the People's Party from 1995 to 2000. Later, he held various leadership positions within the People's Party of Catalonia (PPC). These roles included vice-Secretary General and Secretary of Municipal Policy.
Local Government Work
Albiol also worked in local government groups that cover more than one city. From 1991 to 1995, he was a deputy speaker for the People's Party in the Comarcal Council of Barcelonés. He then became the speaker for this council from 1995 to 1999.
During this time, he also advised the group of municipalities in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. From 1999 to 2003, he was the speaker for his party in the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona. He is still an important member of the PPC's main committee.
Mayor of Badalona
On June 6, 2011, Xavier García Albiol was elected Mayor of Badalona for the first time. He won with a simple majority of votes.
Helping the Community
On January 23, 2013, Mayor Albiol started a special campaign in Badalona. With help from local supermarkets, he launched "A Badalona no es llença el menjar" (In Badalona, we don't waste food). This campaign aimed to sell food that was close to its expiration date at half price. The goal was to reduce food waste and help people save money.
Changes in Leadership
In the 2015 Badalona city council election, Albiol's party received the most votes, about 35%. They also won the most city councilors, with 11 out of 27. However, 15 councilors from other parties joined together to elect Dolors Sabater as mayor instead.
Albiol became mayor for a second time in April 2020. This happened after the previous mayor resigned. The other political parties could not agree on a new leader, so Albiol stepped in.
In October 2021, some information came to light that led to a vote of no confidence against Albiol. On November 8, 2021, the vote passed, and Rubén Guijarro became the new mayor of Badalona.
Return to Mayor's Office
In the 2023 local elections, the People's Party, led by García Albiol, won a large number of votes. They secured 18 out of the 27 town councilor positions. Because of this strong win, Xavier García Albiol was sworn in as mayor for the third time on June 18, 2023.
Other Political Roles
Besides being mayor, Albiol has also served as a member of the Spanish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 2016. In this role, he works on various committees. These include the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, and the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons.
