Building The Dome

Why The Dome Was Built

The idea for The Dome started way back in 1985. The local council in Doncaster wanted to create something special. They hoped it would bring new energy and confidence to the community. Doncaster needed a boost, and The Dome was meant to kickstart a new, exciting time for the town.

How The Dome Was Made

An architect named Faulkner Brown designed the building. Work began in November 1986. It took almost three years to finish, with the building ready in August 1989. Diana, Princess of Wales officially opened The Dome on November 26, 1989. The whole project cost about £26 million. In October 2023, The Dome became a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

Fun Things To Do At The Dome

The Lagoons: Splash and Swim

The Lagoons are seven cool swimming pools linked together. They have a special area for kids and exciting water slides. You can go to parties here or take swimming lessons. In 2002, two new slides called 'The Anaconda' and 'Alligator Attack' were added. Later, in 2005, 'The Amazonian Falls' opened, which is a super-fast double slide. There are also bubbly whirlpools, water cannons, and even artificial geysers!

The Ice Caps: Skate and Slide

The Ice Caps is The Dome's unique ice skating rink. It has two different levels connected by ramps. There are also two smaller rinks. It's a huge area of ice, perfect for skating with friends or family.
