Domenico Allegri facts for kids
Domenico Allegri (born around 1585, died September 5, 1629) was an Italian musician. He was a talented composer and singer during the early Baroque period. This was a time when music was becoming more dramatic and expressive. Domenico was part of the Roman School, a group of composers working in Rome.
He was the second son of Costantino Allegri, a coachman from Milan who lived in Rome. Domenico had a more famous older brother, Gregorio Allegri, who was also a composer. Their father made sure three of his sons, Gregorio, Domenico, and Bartolomeo, studied music. They learned at a church called San Luigi dei Francesi. Their teacher was Giovanni Bernardino Nanino, a well-known maestro di capella (music director). Domenico studied alongside his brother Gregorio and other future musicians like Antonio Cifra.
A Musical Career
Domenico Allegri held important music jobs in different churches. In 1606, he became the maestro di cappella (music director) at the church of Santa Maria in Spello. This meant he was in charge of all the music there.
From September 1609 to April 1610, he worked in the same role. This time, it was at the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome. On April 3, 1610, he started his most important job. He became the music director at the grand Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. He stayed in this position until he passed away. He was also buried at this church.
His Music and Legacy
Domenico Allegri is known for something special in music. He was one of the first composers to add specific instruments to church music. Before him, sacred vocal music often didn't have detailed instrumental parts.
He wrote music for voices that included instruments like two violins. This was a new and exciting idea for the time. Sadly, much of his music has been lost over the years. However, one important piece that still exists is called Modi quos expositis in choris. It was written in 1617. This piece clearly shows how he used violins to accompany the singers. His work helped change how church music was composed.
