How to Play Don't Wake Daddy
The main goal of Don't Wake Daddy is to be the first player to reach the refrigerator. You want to get a late-night snack without waking up the sleeping father. The father lies in a big bed in the middle of the game board.
Moving Around the Board
Players take turns spinning a spinner to see how many spaces they can move. You move your game piece along the path on the board. The path leads to the refrigerator.
Making Noise and Waking Dad
Some spaces on the board are "noise" spaces. If you land on a noise space, you check your cards. If the color of the noise space doesn't match a card you have, you've made a noise! These noises can be things like:
- Rollerblades
- A barking dog
- A cuckoo clock
- Falling pots and pans
- A crying baby
When you make a noise, you must press the alarm clock button next to the father. You press it a certain number of times. If you press it enough times, the alarm clock will go off! The father will suddenly sit up in bed. This means he woke up!
What Happens When Dad Wakes Up
If you wake up the father, you have to give one of your colored cards to another player. Then, you must move your game piece all the way back to the start of the board. This makes the game exciting and a bit tricky!
History and Popularity
Don't Wake Daddy was first shown to the public in 1992. This happened at a big event called the American International Toy Fair. The game quickly became very popular.
A Best-Selling Game
In 1992, Don't Wake Daddy was chosen as one of the best toys of the year. It was especially popular among girls. During the 1992 Christmas season, it was one of the top-selling games. Its success helped the company Hasbro have a very good year. Parker Brothers also made a smaller, travel-sized version of the game. This meant people could play it anywhere!
Inspired by the Game
The game also inspired other creative works. A German artist named Martin Kippenberger used the symbols from the game's "noises" in his art. He made wood-carvings and oil paintings based on them. In 2001, a children's book based on the game was published. It was called Don't Wake Daddy: Late-Night Snack.
