Donald Myrick (born April 6, 1940 – died July 30, 1993) was an American saxophonist. He was a talented musician known for his amazing saxophone solos. Don Myrick was a member of a group called The Phenix Horns. He is most famous for his work with the popular bands Earth, Wind & Fire and with the singer Phil Collins.

Don Myrick played different types of saxophones, including the alto, tenor, and soprano sax. He was part of Earth, Wind & Fire's original horn section, The Phenix Horns, from 1975 to 1982. Before that, Myrick was a member of a musical group called The Pharaohs. He also helped start the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which is an important group for creative music.

Some of his most well-known saxophone solos can be heard in Phil Collins' songs like "All of My Life," "If Leaving Me Is Easy," and "One More Night." You can even see Myrick playing the sax solo in the music video for "One More Night," which was filmed in a pub in London. He also played famous solos on Earth, Wind & Fire's live album Gratitude for the song "Reasons," and on "After the Love Has Gone" from their album I Am. Don Myrick performed with many other famous musicians, such as Grover Washington, Jr. and Carlos Santana. He also appeared on records by artists like Bobby "Blue" Bland, The Dells, Regina Belle, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Heaven 17.

In 1977/78, Earth, Wind & Fire's song "Runnin'" helped Don Myrick win a Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental. This shows how talented he was!

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Donald Myrick grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He went to Crane Junior College there. While at college, he was part of a band called The Jazzmen. In this band, he played with Louis Satterfield. Later, Louis Satterfield would join Myrick in The Phenix Horns, performing with Earth, Wind & Fire. Myrick and Satterfield also played together in a group called The Pharaohs. They played with musicians from Chess Records, including a drummer named Maurice White. Maurice White later went on to create the famous band Earth, Wind & Fire.

Remembering Don Myrick

Don Myrick passed away on July 30, 1993, when he was 53 years old. He was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Los Angeles County.

After his passing, his friend Phil Collins released a song called "For a Friend" in 1993. This song was a special tribute to Myrick, who had played a big part in Collins's music and live shows for many years. Today, when Earth, Wind & Fire perform live, Gary Bias plays the saxophone solos that Don Myrick originally made famous. This helps keep Myrick's musical legacy alive. Don Myrick was survived by his mother, Antoinette Myrick-Carr, his wife Barbara, and his three daughters: Shani, Lauren, and Shirika Myrick. He also had a cousin, Elliot Myrick.
