Donald "Isa" Hamm Bryant (born January 8, 1943 – died 2007) was a very important person who worked as an artist, author, historian, and activist. He lived in both Florida and California. He is best known for starting the Florida Black Historical Research Project. This project helped save and share the history of the Black Seminoles, a group of people with both African and Seminole heritage.

Donald Bryant was born in Ybor City on January 8, 1943. His parents were Florence and Charlie Long Bryant. He grew up in West Palm Beach, where his aunt, Othella Hamm, raised him. He had four sons and was married twice.

Discovering His Roots

In the 1990s, Donald Bryant moved back to West Palm Beach. He went there to take care of his father. During this time, his father taught him about their family history. He learned that his great-great-grandfather was a Seminole. This discovery deeply connected him to his heritage.

Preserving History

Donald Bryant became very active in preserving the history of his community. He helped organize special events at Riverbend Regional Park in Jupiter, Florida. These events remembered the Battle of the Loxahatchee. This battle was a very important moment in Florida's history. It was where the "Trail of Tears" began for many Seminoles in Florida. This sad journey happened after a big fight between 500 to 700 Seminoles and about 1,700 U.S. soldiers.

Bryant also helped write a book called We R Florida. This book shared stories about Seminole life in Palm Beach County. His work helped many people learn about the rich history and culture of the Seminole people.

Legacy and Impact

Through the Florida Black Historical Research Project, Donald Bryant worked hard to make sure the stories of Black Seminoles were not forgotten. He believed it was important to remember and honor the past. His efforts helped preserve valuable history for future generations.

Donald Bryant passed away in San Francisco in 2007, at the age of 64, after having a heart attack. His work continues to inspire people to learn about and protect history.
