Donald Cameron of Lochiel was an important Scottish soldier and a leader of the Clan Cameron. He was known as the 23rd 'Lochiel,' which is the special title for the chief of the Clan Cameron. He was born in 1796 and lived until 1858. He is especially remembered for his bravery during the famous Waterloo campaign.
Growing Up
Donald Cameron was born on September 25, 1796, in a place called Kilmallie, in Lochaber, Scotland. His father was also named Donald Cameron, and he was the 22nd Lochiel. In 1784, his family got their lands back in Lochaber and rebuilt their home, Achnacarry.
Donald's mother was Anne Abercromby. Her father was a famous general named Sir Ralph Abercromby. Donald went to a well-known school called Harrow.
Military Life and Leadership
In 1814, Donald Cameron became an officer in the Grenadier Guards, a special part of the British Army. He fought in one of the most important battles in history, the Battle of Waterloo, on June 18, 1815. He fought alongside his cousin, John Cameron of Fassiefern.
After his father passed away in 1832, Donald left the army. He then took on the important role of the 23rd Chief of Clan Cameron. He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness-shire and Buckinghamshire, which meant he helped represent the King in those areas.
Family Life
On July 31, 1832, Donald Cameron married Lady Vere Hobart. Together, they had several children:
