Donell Jones (born May 22, 1973) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is from Chicago, Illinois. Donell began his career in the mid-1990s. He first wrote songs for other artists. Later, he signed with a record label called LaFace Records.

His first album, My Heart (1996), had some popular songs. These included "In the Hood" and his cover of Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet." Donell became famous with his second album, Where I Wanna Be (1999). This album featured the hit song "U Know What's Up" with Lisa Lopes. The album sold over a million copies. His song "U Know What's Up" reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Donell Jones: A Music Star

Donell Jones was born on May 22, 1973. His mother is Renee Byrd. His father, Roy Jones, was a gospel singer. Donell grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He later met a music producer named Eddie F. Eddie F was part of the group Heavy D & the Boyz. Donell signed with Eddie F's company, Untouchables, and also with LaFace Records. He started by writing hit songs for other artists. These artists included Usher and 702.

Becoming a Star: His Big Hits

In June 1996, Donell released his first album, My Heart. He produced most of the album himself. Other producers also helped him. The album did fairly well. It reached number 30 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. His first two singles, "In the Hood" and "Knocks Me Off My Feet," became top 30 hits.

In 1999, Donell had huge success. He released his second album, Where I Wanna Be. The album was boosted by its hit song "U Know What's Up." This song reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "U Know What's Up" was popular around the world. It reached the top ten in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In the UK, it peaked at number two. The album Where I Wanna Be reached number six on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US.

The album also had other popular songs. These included "Shorty (Got Her Eyes On Me)" and "Where I Wanna Be." The song "Where I Wanna Be" reached number two on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album was certified platinum. This means it sold over one million copies. In 2000, Donell sang the song "I'll Go" for the movie Love & Basketball. He also won an American Music Award that year. He was named Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist.

Donell worked with his team again for his third album, Life Goes On. This album was released in June 2002. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. It also reached number three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This made it his highest-charting album so far. It earned a gold certification. This means it sold over 500,000 copies. His fifth regular album, Lyrics, was released in September 2010. Donell mostly produced this album himself. It reached number 28 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It also reached number nine on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album had two singles. One song, "Love Like This," reached the top five on Billboard's Adult R&B Songs chart.

Donell's sixth album, Forever, came out in July 2013. This album also came from his own company. It reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album's main song, "Forever," reached number 14 on Billboard's Adult R&B Songs chart.

In 2016, Donell released a new song called "Never Let Her Go." He worked with rapper David Banner on this song. He went on a tour in 2017 to promote it. In 2018, Donell sang and helped write the song "23" for the artist Jacquees.

In 2019, Donell worked with Jon B. on a duet called "Understand." He also announced plans for a new album. This album, called 100% Free, was released on February 14, 2021. It was available on digital services and for free on his website.
