Donna Marie Britt is an American author and a former newspaper writer. She used to write columns that appeared in many newspapers. She also worked as a reporter and a critic.
Her first book, Brothers (& me): A Memoir of Loving and Giving, came out in 2011. It was published by Little, Brown and Company.
Growing Up and School
Donna Britt grew up in Gary, Indiana. Her dad, Thomas, worked in construction. Her mom, Geraldine, sold insurance and helped people get jobs for the state.
She finished West Side High School in Gary. Later, she earned a college degree in film from Hampton University.
In 1977, Donna was studying for her master's degree at the University of Michigan. During this time, her older brother Darrell passed away. She later wrote a lot about this event and how it affected her family.
Her Career in Journalism
Donna Britt started her writing career at the Detroit Free Press in 1980. There, she wrote about many different topics. She also wrote about fashion.
She later worked as an editor and film critic for USA Today. In 1989, she joined The Washington Post. She became well-known for her opinion columns. She often wrote about social issues, culture, and race. Her weekly column appeared in newspapers in over 60 cities. It was shared by the Washington Post Writer's Group.
Her 2011 book, Brothers (& me): a Memoir of Loving and Giving, received praise. O: The Oprah Magazine named it one of the "Ten Titles to Pick Up Now" in January 2012. Parts of the book were also featured in Essence magazine that same month.
Her Family Life
Donna Britt is married to Kevin Merida. He is also an author and an executive editor at the Los Angeles Times. In 2012, Britt and Merida were listed among the top African American power couples by HuffPost.
They have three sons. Their names are Justin Britt-Gibson, Darrell Britt-Gibson, and Skye Merida. Justin and Darrell are from Donna's first marriage.
Donna Britt enjoys well-being and meditation. She has been teaching yoga since 2004.
Awards and Recognition
Donna Britt has won many awards for her work. She received top honors from groups like the National Association of Black Journalists. She also won awards from The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. The American Society of Newspaper Editors also recognized her achievements.
