Donough's Lands and Properties
Donough O'Brien received many lands from his father in 1543. These lands included places like Leameneagh and Dromoland. He also gained control of properties that belonged to the Abbey of Corcomroe. These lands were very important for his family's power and wealth.
A Difficult Time and His Death
In 1580, Donough O'Brien joined a group of people who were rebelling against the government. This group included the sons of the Earl of Clanricarde. Later, in September 1582, Donough decided to surrender. He had a special document called a "letter of protection." This letter was supposed to keep him safe.
However, there was a misunderstanding about his protection. Because of this, Donough was put to death. This happened at the gates of Limerick. It was later found out that his letter of protection was actually valid. This meant his death was a mistake.
After His Death
Even though Donough died, his family did not lose their lands. The important estates of Leameneagh and Dromoland were given back to his family. This happened because it was proven that his execution was an error. The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, eventually granted a pardon. This pardon helped Donough's children and future generations. Donough was buried in the monastery at Ennis.
