Dora Louise Murdoch was born on September 14, 1857, in New Haven, Connecticut. When she was older, she traveled to Paris, France, to study art. In Paris, she learned from famous teachers. Some of her teachers included Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois, and Lucien Simon. These teachers helped her develop her painting skills.

Dora Louise Murdoch was a member of several important art groups. These included the American Federation of Arts and the American Watercolor Society. She also belonged to the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the New York Watercolor Society, and the Washington DC Watercolor Society. Being part of these groups showed how respected she was as an artist.

Her paintings were shown at big events. One important exhibition was the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. This was a very large event where people from all over the world shared their inventions and art.
