History of the Church
The church was built for a Baptist community that was formed in 1886. It stands as the oldest Baptist church building in the Dorchester area of Boston.
Unique Shingle Style Design
The church was designed in 1889 by an architect named Arthur H. Vinal. He used a special building style called Shingle Style. This style was popular in the late 1800s and is known for using wood shingles to cover the outside of the building, giving it a cozy, natural look.
Because of its historical importance and unique architecture, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This is a list of places in the United States that are worth protecting.
Surviving a Storm
In 1938, a powerful storm called the 1938 New England hurricane hit the area. The church suffered some damage from the strong winds and rain. However, the community worked to repair the building, helping it stand strong for many more years.
The Church Today
The church is still an active place for the community. In 2010, it started a media ministry called Boston Praise Radio. This allows its messages to reach people all over North America through the internet and satellite services. In 2016, the church also began broadcasting on a local radio station, WBPG-LP 102.9 FM.
