Dorinda "Dori" Sanders, born in 1934 in York County, South Carolina, is a talented African-American writer and farmer. She is famous for her novels and a special cookbook. Her first novel, Clover, became a very popular book in 1990. It even won an award called the Lillian Smith Book Award that same year.
Dori Sanders also wrote a cookbook titled Dori Sanders' Country Cooking. This book is more than just recipes; it shares fun stories from her family farm.
A Farmer and a Writer
Dori Sanders is the eighth of ten children in her family. She is a fourth-generation farmer, meaning her family has been farming for a very long time! She works with her brother on their farm, called Sanders Peach Farm and Roadside Market. They grow delicious peaches and fresh vegetables in Filbert, South Carolina.
Her father, who was a teacher in a rural school, bought the farm land around 1915. He started successfully growing peaches in the early 1920s. This shows how farming has been a big part of Dori's family for many years. In 2011, Dori Sanders received the Craig Claiborne Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognized her important contributions to food and writing.
