Doris Loveday Carver (born in 1946, passed away in 2024) was an amazing American computer scientist. She was also a software engineer. She worked at Louisiana State University. There, she was a special professor of computer science. She also led the Software Engineering Laboratory. She was even the president of a big group called the IEEE Computer Society. She was also the main editor for their magazine, IEEE Computer.

Doris Carver's Early Life and Education

Doris Carver went to Carson–Newman College for her first degree. She then earned a master's degree in mathematics. This was at the University of Tennessee in 1969.

Later, in the late 1970s, she started studying for her Ph.D. at Texas A&M University. She first studied mathematics. But she soon changed to computer science. She found computer science very interesting. She finished her Ph.D. in computer science in 1981. Her special research was about how complicated computer programs affect changes.

Doris Carver's Career in Computer Science

After getting her Ph.D., Doris Carver became a teacher. She first taught at Southeastern Louisiana University. Then, in 1986, she moved to Louisiana State University.

At Louisiana State, she held many important jobs. She was the Interim Dean for the Graduate School. She also helped lead research and economic development. She even took time off from teaching. During that time, she worked for the National Science Foundation.

In 1998, she became the president of the IEEE Computer Society. This is a very important group for computer professionals. Later, she became the main editor for their magazine, IEEE Computer.

Awards and Special Recognition

Doris Carver received many honors for her work. In 1998, she was named a Fellow of the IEEE. This honor was for her important contributions to software engineering. Software engineering is about designing and building computer programs.

In 2002, she became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This is another big honor for scientists. In 2004, the IEEE Computer Society gave her the Richard E. Merwin Award. This award recognized her excellent service to the computer field.
