She spent two years studying film at the University of the Pacific in California. Later, she continued her studies at the New School of Social Research in New York. While in New York, she worked different jobs, like in cafés and showing films at the Goethe-Institut.
In 1975, Doris Dörrie returned to West Germany. She then began studying at the University of Television and Film Munich. This helped her learn even more about making movies.
