Doris Benta Maria Löve (born January 2, 1918 – died February 25, 2000) was a Swedish scientist who studied plants. She was especially known for her work on plants in the cold Arctic regions.

Biography

Doris Löve was born in Kristianstad, Sweden. She loved studying plants and started learning about them at Lund University in 1937. There, she met and married another student and scientist named Áskell Löve, who was from Iceland.

Doris earned her PhD in botany in 1944. A PhD is a very high university degree that shows you are an expert in your field. Her main study for her PhD was a plant called Melandrium.

After their studies, Doris and Áskell moved to Iceland. They then moved several times, living in places like Winnipeg (Canada) in 1951, Montreal (Canada) in 1955, and Boulder (USA) in 1965. At some universities, Doris could not work as a professor at the same time as her husband. They finally moved to San Jose, California, in 1974.

Together, Doris and Áskell Löve studied the chromosome numbers of plants. Chromosomes are tiny parts inside cells that carry genetic information. They used this information to understand how plants are related and how they should be grouped. This field is called cytotaxonomy. They wrote many papers about their findings and are seen as the people who started this way of studying plants.

In 1962, Doris helped organize an important science meeting. It was about the plants and animals of the North Atlantic area and how they got there over time. Many famous scientists shared their ideas at this meeting.

In 1997, Doris wrote a book about her family's history. This book was placed in the Hunt Botanical Library in Pittsburgh.
