Doris Mühringer (born September 18, 1920 – died May 26, 2009) was a famous writer from Austria. She wrote poems, short stories, and books for children. Many people thought her poetry was very important. She also won several awards for her writing.
Her Early Life and Writing Journey
Doris Mühringer was born in Graz, Austria. When she was seven, she became very sick. She had to stay in bed for many months. After that, she had to learn how to walk again. During this time, she found a love for books. She especially loved fairy tales. These stories gave her exciting new ideas. They even inspired her own poems later in life.
In 1929, her family moved to Vienna. Doris studied at the University of Vienna. She explored different subjects but did not finish her degree. After World War II, she moved to Salzburg. There, she worked as a translator from English. She also did secretarial work and proofread books for publishers.
She met a writer named Hans Weigel. He encouraged her to move back to Vienna. He also became her mentor, helping her with her writing. In 1954, Hans Weigel included some of her poems in his book, Stimmen der Gegenwart (Voices from the Present).
In 1976, Doris Mühringer wrote her own version of a famous fairy tale. It was "Der Wolf und die sieben Geißlein" ("The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids"). This story was part of a children's book. The book was called Neues vom Rumpelstilzchen. It had stories from 43 different authors.
Awards and Recognition
Soon after her poems were published in Stimmen der Gegenwart, Doris Mühringer started winning awards. In 1954, she received the Georg Trakl Poetry Award. Then, in 1956, she won the Bertelsmann Poetry Prize.
She continued to receive many other honors. These included the Boga-Tinti Prize in 1972. In 2001, she was given the Austrian Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature. This award is called Österreichischer Kinder- und Jugendbuchpreis in German.
Doris Mühringer was part of important writing groups. She was a member of the PEN Club. This is an international group for writers. She also belonged to the Austrian PODIUM. She often attended literary events and gave public readings of her work. In 1969, she even went on a lecture tour in the United States.
Even though she didn't publish a huge number of books, her work was highly valued. The Austrian writer Gerhard Ruiss said that Doris Mühringer was one of the most important poets in Austria. He believed her contributions to Austrian poetry were very significant.
