Who Was Dorothea Gotherson?

Dorothea Gotherson was an important English writer and religious leader. She was a member of the Quaker faith. Quakers are a Christian group known for their peaceful beliefs. Dorothea was born in 1611 in a place called Godmersham in Kent, England.

Her Early Life

Dorothea was the youngest child of Mary Knatchbull and Thomas Scott. Her father, Thomas Scott, was a member of parliament. He owned a large estate in Godmersham. Dorothea's mother passed away when she was young. Her father died in 1635. Dorothea inherited his estate. In that same year, she married John Gotherson. He was also a politician.

Her Religious Work

Dorothea and her husband, John, both became Quakers. Dorothea led a religious group known as "Scott's congregation." This group was named after her family. She preached to them and took care of the group.

In 1660, a book called "An alarm to all priests, judges, magistrates, souldiers, and all people" was published. It was meant to encourage people to change their lives for the better. John Gotherson was listed as the author. However, many people believe that Dorothea helped him write it.

Writing for the King

In 1661, Dorothea wrote and published her own book. It was titled "To All that are Unregenerated, a Call to Repentence." She dedicated this book to King Charles II. In her writing, Dorothea strongly supported the King. She encouraged her readers to also support him.

A Tricky Situation

Dorothea and her husband met an adventurer named Captain John Scott. John Scott claimed to be related to Dorothea's family. Before he went back to America, John Scott convinced the Gothersons to give him money. He promised them a lot of land in Long Island in return. Later, they found out that the land sale was a trick. The land did not belong to him. Dorothea told the King about what happened. She reported the situation.
