Dorothee lived in Heilsberg with her family until 1945. Her mother, who became a widow during World War II, worked to help people in need. In 1945, they had to leave their home in East Prussia and moved west to Mecklenburg.

Early Artistic Journey

Dorothee started exploring art at a young age. She took part in art classes for children and teenagers. Later, while working in agriculture, she also attended evening high school. She continued to improve her artistic skills through various courses and programs.

Becoming a Professional Artist

In 1971, Dorothee Rätsch passed an important test and became a member of the Association of Artists of the GDR. This was a big step for her career. Since then, she has shown her art in many exhibitions both in Germany and other countries. She also participated in "plein airs," which are outdoor painting or sculpting events.

Today, Dorothee mainly works in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region. She takes part in local events like KUNST OFFEN, where artists open their studios to visitors. She also participates in Offene Gärten, where people can visit beautiful gardens.

Slavic Village and Sculpture Garden

Dorothee Rätsch now lives and works in Passentin, a town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. From 1994 to 1999, she helped create the Slavic Village Passentin. This village is a special place where people can learn about early medieval times. Dorothee came up with the idea, planned it, and oversaw its construction.

Working with children and young people has always been very important to her. She often leads art courses for them. Next to her studio, she has also created a beautiful sculpture garden where her artworks are displayed.

Sculptures and Artworks

Dorothee Rätsch creates small sculptures, medals, and figures. She uses materials like bronze, terracotta (a type of clay), and wood. Her art also includes reliefs, which are sculptures that stick out from a flat surface.
