Dorothy Geneva Styles (born December 13, 1922 – died February 12, 1984) was a very talented American woman. She was a composer, a mathematician, an organist, and a poet. She used her skills in many different ways throughout her life.

Early Life and Education

Dorothy Styles was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. Her parents were Minnie A. Shelnut and Alfred Alexander Styles. From a young age, Dorothy showed a strong gift for music. When she was just 10 years old, she performed on WEXL radio. As a teenager, she even started giving music lessons to others.

Dorothy loved learning and continued her education. She studied at the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1945. Later, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in 1954. She also earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1970.

Career and Works

Dorothy Styles had a busy and creative career. She worked as a teacher, sharing her knowledge with others. She was also an organist at Hazel Park Baptist Tabernacle in Hazel Park, Michigan. An organist plays the organ, a large musical instrument. Dorothy also directed choirs at St. Timothy’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wayne, Michigan. This meant she led groups of singers.

Dorothy Styles wrote many different kinds of works. She wrote prose, which is like regular writing, and also vocal pieces, which are songs.
