Dorothy Lynch is a famous brand of salad dressing that was first made in Nebraska, a state in the American Midwest. It is made by a company called Tasty Toppings.
This dressing has a unique reddish-orange color. Many people in Nebraska use it not just on salads, but also as a dip for snacks or a sauce for other foods. While it might look like French dressing, its flavor is different. It's made with a tomato base and special spices like celery seed.
The Story of a Special Dressing
The story of Dorothy Lynch dressing begins with a woman named Dorothy Lynch. In the late 1940s, she and her husband ran a restaurant at the Legion Club in Saint Paul, Nebraska. Dorothy created a special homemade dressing that became a huge hit with their customers.
From Restaurant Secret to Local Favorite
People loved the dressing so much that they started bringing their own empty bottles and jars to the restaurant. They would ask Dorothy to fill them up so they could enjoy the dressing at home. Seeing how popular it was, Dorothy decided to start selling it.
At first, the family made the dressing in large batches at the restaurant. Then, they moved the operation to their basement. Eventually, they set up a small building in Saint Paul to produce it.
Growing the Brand
The recipe for the dressing was officially patented in 1951. This meant that the recipe was legally protected. In 1964, the Lynch family sold the brand and its secret recipe to a businessman named Gordon "Mac" Hull.
Mac Hull built a factory for the dressing in Columbus, Nebraska. As the dressing became even more popular, the company needed more space. In 1979, they moved to a larger, 65,000-square-foot factory in the nearby town of Duncan, Nebraska, where it is still made today.
