Dorothy Laverne Meredith (1906 – 1986) was a talented American artist and teacher. She was especially known for her amazing fiber art, which uses threads and fabrics, and her beautiful abstract watercolor paintings.

Early Life and Learning

Dorothy Laverne Meredith was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 17, 1906. Her mother, Ida Simmerling, was also an artist. Dorothy loved art from a young age.

She went to the Layton School of Art and finished her studies there in 1927. Later, she attended Milwaukee State Teachers College (now part of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee). She earned a Bachelor of Education degree in 1933. This degree helped her become a teacher.

Dorothy also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. There, she learned from a famous artist named Maija Grotell. Dorothy also worked with the New Deal Federal Art Project in Wisconsin. This project helped artists during a tough time in history.

Her Amazing Career

Dorothy Meredith started her career as an art teacher. She taught at several schools, including Winnebago Day School in Menasha and Peckham Junior High School in Milwaukee.

For many years, she was an art professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She taught students about fiber arts and textiles. In the summers, she also taught at the Ox Bow School of Art and Artists Residency in Saugatuck. Later, she became a professor emeritus, which means she was honored for her long service.

Traveling for Art

In 1965, Dorothy traveled to 11 different countries. She wanted to learn more about traditional textile techniques from around the world. Her travels took her to places like India, Pakistan, and Japan. She even visited small, rural areas to find out how people made textiles in traditional ways. These trips helped her make her art classes even better.

Art Groups and Honors

Dorothy was very active in the art community. She was the secretary and president of the Wisconsin Designer Craftsmen's organization. This group is now called the Wisconsin Designer Crafts Council. She also helped start the Wisconsin Watercolor Society. She was a member of other art groups too, like the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors.

In 1960, Dorothy was given a special honor. She was elected a life fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1975, she became an American Craft Council (ACC) fellow. These honors showed how much her art and teaching were respected.

Dorothy Meredith passed away on July 6, 1986, in Washington County, Wisconsin.
