Growing Up in Ireland
Dorothy Mary Molloy was born in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. Her father, Patrick Molloy, was a builder. When Dorothy was about six years old, her family moved to Dublin. She had three brothers and two sisters.
Dorothy went to school at Loreto Abbey, Dalkey. After that, she studied languages like French and Spanish at University College Dublin (UCD). She even spent time in France and Spain as an exchange student.
Exploring History and Art
After finishing college, Dorothy moved to Barcelona, Spain. There, she worked on a special project for UCD. Her job was to research and write about the history of Irish people living in Europe. She spent a lot of time looking through old records in Spanish archives.
Dorothy also worked as a journalist. She wrote articles for different magazines, including Destino in Spain, Art and Artists in London, and the Irish Independent newspaper. She also helped manage an art gallery in Spain.
Dorothy's Art Exhibitions
While working as a journalist, Dorothy was also a painter. In 1970, she won first prize at a big art show in Barcelona. She then had her own art shows in Barcelona in 1971 and 1973.
In 1979, Dorothy came back to Dublin. She continued to show her art, with solo exhibitions in Galway in 1984 and Dublin in 1991. Her paintings were quite popular and sold well.
A Return to Learning
Dorothy loved to learn! She went back to college and earned a master's degree in medieval studies from UCD in 1984. She also got a diploma in psychology. Later, in 1997, she completed her Ph.D.
From 1997 to 2003, Dorothy taught writing workshops at UCD. Around this time, she also started sending her poems to be published.
Her Famous Poetry
Dorothy's first book of poems, called Hare soup, was published in 2004 by Faber and Faber. The book was very well-received by critics and won the Irish Times Poetry Now Award in 2005.
Sadly, Dorothy Molloy was diagnosed with liver cancer in November 2003. She passed away in Dublin on 4 January 2004.
Even after her death, more of her poetry was published. Gethsemane Day came out in 2006, followed by Long-Distance Swimmer in 2009. In 2019, a collection called The Poems of Dorothy Molloy was released. It included all her published and some previously uncollected works.
Her Family Life
Dorothy Molloy married Andrew Carpenter on 3 February 1983. Andrew was a professor in the School of English at UCD. They did not have any children.
