Dorothy Pantin (born June 28, 1896 – died August 6, 1985) was an amazing pioneer. She was the very first woman doctor and surgeon on the Isle of Man.

Growing Up and Becoming a Doctor

Dorothy Pantin was born in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1896. Her father, Charles Satchell Pantin, was also a doctor. Dorothy was one of five children. Interestingly, both she and one of her brothers, Charles Guy Pantin, chose to become doctors.

Dorothy went to St Paul's school. After that, she studied medicine at the London School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree in 1920 and finished her studies in 1922.

Making a Difference in Healthcare

Dorothy returned to the Isle of Man in 1923. Her main goal was to make medical care better for children and mothers. She became the island's top doctor for pregnant women and new mothers.

Improving Maternity Care

Dorothy helped design the new maternity building, which opened in 1939. While she worked on the island, the number of mothers who died during childbirth dropped by more than half. This shows how much her efforts helped save lives.

She was also the first medical supervisor of the Jane Crookall Maternity Home. Dorothy performed the island's first blood transfusion in 1926. She also performed the third Caesarean section in the island's history in 1928. This was only the second successful Caesarean section ever done there.

Working at Noble's Hospital

From 1926, Dorothy Pantin worked as an honorary surgeon at Noble's Hospital and Dispensary. She worked hard to make sure people had good diets, especially during tough times like the Great Depression. She also helped prevent a bone disease called rickets.

When the special bone ward opened at Noble's Hospital in 1932, Dorothy was there every day. She spent 11 years as a leader for the Isle of Man branch of the British Medical Association. She even became its president in 1937. Dorothy Pantin passed away in August 1985 and was buried in the Douglas Borough Cemetery.

Remembering Dorothy Pantin

Dorothy Pantin is remembered in several ways. One of the buildings on the Isle of Man is named after her. There is also a special plaque honoring her at the Jane Crookall maternity ward at Noble’s Hospital. She was even featured on an Isle of Man postage stamp!
