Dorothy Savile, Viscountess Halifax (born Dorothy Spencer; 1640 – 16 December 1670) was an important English noblewoman in the 17th century. She was the first wife of George Savile, 1st Viscount Halifax, a well-known politician and writer. Dorothy was also the mother of William Savile, who later became the 2nd Marquess of Halifax.

Who Was Dorothy Savile?
Dorothy Savile was born in 1640. She came from a very important family in England. Her life took place during a time of big changes in English history. As a noblewoman, she was part of the upper class of society.
Her Family Background
Dorothy's parents were also famous in their time. Her father was Henry Spencer, 1st Earl of Sunderland. An Earl was a high-ranking noble title. Her mother was Lady Dorothy Sidney. Lady Dorothy Sidney was known for her intelligence and beauty. She was also a patron of poets and writers. This means she supported artists with money and encouragement.
Her Marriage and Children
Lady Dorothy Spencer married George Savile, 1st Viscount Halifax on 29 December 1656. Their wedding took place in London at a church called St Giles in the Fields. George Savile was a rising star in English politics.
Dorothy and George had two children together:
- William Savile, 2nd Marquess of Halifax
- Anne Savile, who later became the Countess of Carbery. She was born around 1663 and passed away in 1690.
Her Husband's Titles
In 1667, George Savile was given the title of Viscount Halifax. A Viscount is a noble rank, below an Earl but above a Baron. This meant Dorothy became "Viscountess Halifax." Sadly, Dorothy passed away on 16 December 1670.
After her death, George Savile married again in 1672. His second wife was Gertrude Pierrepont. Years later, in 1682, George Savile received an even higher title. He became the Marquess of Halifax. A Marquess is a very high noble rank, just below a Duke. This happened several years after Dorothy's passing.
