Dorothy "Dottie" Peoples is a famous American gospel singer from Dayton, Ohio. After finishing high school, she toured with gospel pioneer Dorothy Norwood. Dorothy Norwood was a member of a group called the Caravans.
Later, Dottie Peoples explored jazz. In 1979, she moved to Atlanta. There, she returned to singing gospel music. People often call her the "Songbird of the South" because of her beautiful voice.
Dottie Peoples' Music Career
Dottie Peoples has performed at many big events. She sang with the band Widespread Panic at the first-ever Bonnaroo Music Festival. She also performed with Dorothy Norwood.
A special moment was when she sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 1996 Olympics. She also sang "He's an On Time God" at the memorial service for John Lewis. In 2020, she performed at the Stellar Awards.
Dottie Peoples has received an honorary Doctor of Sacred Music degree. This is a special title given for her contributions to sacred music. She often tours and performs with her friend, Garnelle Hubbard-Spearman.

Awards and Recognitions
Dottie Peoples has won many awards for her gospel music. She has been recognized for her singing and her albums.
She won several Atlanta Gospel Choice Awards in 1994 and 1995. These included "Song of the Year" for "Pure Love" and "On Time God." She was also named "Female Soloist Traditional."
The Stellar Awards have honored her many times. In 1995, she won "Female Vocalist-Traditional." Her album On Time God won "Album of the Year." The song "On Time God" also won "Song of the Year." She won "Top Female Vocalist" again at the Stellar Awards in 1996.
She also received the NAACP Phoenix Awards for "Female Vocalist of the Year" in 1996. In 1997, she was given the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dottie Peoples has also been nominated for Grammy Awards. Her albums God Can & God Will (2000), Show Up and Show Out (2002), and The Water I Give (2005) all received Grammy nominations.
She won a Soul Train Music Awards for "Best Gospel Album of the Year" for God Can & God Will in 2000. That same year, she won a Dove Awards for "Traditional Gospel Recorded Song of the Year" for "God Can."
