The Doughty Block is a really old and important building in downtown Augusta, Maine. It was built way back in 1890. This building is special because it was the only tall building (a "high rise") in downtown Augusta from the 1800s. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Discovering the Doughty Block
The Doughty Block stands in the main shopping area of Augusta. You can find it on the east side of Water Street. It is across from Key Plaza, just north of Front Street.
What Does the Doughty Block Look Like?
This building is made of brick and has six floors. It is much taller than other buildings from the 1800s nearby. The bricks are red, and it has stone decorations.
The front of the building has three main sections. The ground floor has a modern shop front from around the 1970s. The floors above are separated by stone lines. These lines make the building look wider. Its windows are shaped like round arches. The stones and bricks around the windows switch back and forth. At the very top, there is a fancy ledge. It has decorative brackets and small blocks, which are part of the Italianate style.
Who Built the Doughty Block?
The Doughty Block was built in 1890 for Charles Doughty. The builder was Charles Fletcher. He was a well-known builder in the area.
The building's style is called Italianate. This style was not very popular when the building was made. However, the way the windows are designed hints at the Renaissance style. This newer style was just starting to become popular at the time.
