The Dr. Andrew Castle House, also known as the Castle-Russell House, is a very old and important home in Woodbridge, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1838. This house is a great example of a building style called Greek Revival. It is also special because three important local doctors lived here. In 2000, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States.

Discovering the Dr. Andrew Castle House

The Dr. Andrew Castle House is a historic building. It shows us what homes looked like a long time ago. It also tells us about the people who lived there.

Where is This Historic House?

The Castle House is in a quiet, country part of northeastern Woodbridge. You can find it on the east side of Amity Road. This road is also known as Connecticut Route 63. The house sits on a small hill. From there, it looks out over the road. It is just a short distance south of where Amity Road meets Seymour Road (Connecticut Route 67).

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof. The outside walls are covered with horizontal wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has tall, flat columns at the corners. These columns go up to a wide band of decoration. Above this, the roof forms a triangle shape, like a Greek temple. There is a rectangular window in the middle of this triangle.

The front of the house has three sections. The main door is in the section on the right. A nice porch covers the entrance. This porch has round columns that look like ancient Greek columns. They hold up a flat roof with decorative edges. A part of the house built at the same time sticks out to the back on the south side. It has smooth wooden boards on its front. Another part of the house was added later, in the late 1800s, at the very back.

Who Lived in the Castle House?

The Dr. Andrew Castle House was probably built soon after Dr. Andrew Castle bought the land. He bought the land from David Hotchkiss in 1838. A local master builder named George Sperry is thought to have built the house. We think this because it looks very similar to two other houses he built.

This house is known for its amazing craftsmanship. This means the way it was built, both inside and out, is very detailed and beautiful. Woodbridge is famous for its high-quality 19th-century buildings. Even among those, the Castle House stands out.

Besides Dr. Castle, two other important people lived in this house. One was Dr. David Elwood, who was both a doctor and a religious leader. Another owner was Dr. Thomas Russell, who was a doctor from New Haven.
